DIY Broom Cabinet

You know how much I love my kitchen…I am so proud of it! There is something that was driving me nuts and it’s the gap between the fridge and the pantry door. It was too big to be left alone and too small to do anything with it really. So, I started brainstorming and was inspired by Aden Wang to make a broom cabinet!

Here’s that little gap I was talking about:

The plan was to build a slide-out peg board with some decorative trim and hardware to match the rest of my kitchen! We were already storing a stool here, but I wanted to be able to store other utility things here that I kept shoved in a closet in the hallway. So, let’s get to it!

The Frame

I started with a simple box using 1×3 primed pine with two support beams across. I used wood glue and my drill to secure all the pieces.

Drawer Slides

Then, I added drawer slides to the back of the support pieces. I slid my fridge out and installed the other side of the drawer slides to the wall! I used heavy duty drywall anchors for the screws – I didn’t secure these to studs!

Pegboard

I cut my pegboard down to size with my cutoff tool (love this thing) and then attached it to my frame with wood glue and screws. Then, I painted the entire thing Swiss Coffee (because I just have to)!

I slid the whole piece right in and it was PERFECT. EEEEEE.

Trim

For the front trim piece, I used some leftover trim and scrap wood I had on hand! I painted this piece Creamy White by Benjamin Moore to match my cabinets. Also, I added some holes for the hardware and installed the Lennox Drawer pull – the same one I used in my kitchen!

I then attached the front piece from behind with screws and VOILA!

I knew this broom cabinet was gonna be good, but I didn’t know it was gonna be this good! It’s so nice to be able to easily access all these utility/cleaning products. AND I’m utilizing otherwise useless space!

If you try this, I desperately want to see it!

This is fantastic. Such a good use of the space and really functional for keeping the things you need in the space that you need them.
