DIY Basement Built-Ins: Trim & Crown Moulding

The DIY Basement Built-Ins are really starting to come to life! We left off with the DIY Murphy Bed and installing drawer fronts and cabinet doors. Now, I get to install crown moulding which will really give it that custom look I’m going for. Let’s get to it!

Reminder that this is the inspiration for this built-in/hidden murphy bed project! I’m starting to see it come to life!

Crown Moulding

I decided to carry the crown moulding all the way across the top of the murphy bed. But, split it where the murphy bed starts. Obviously I’d love if it could be seamless all the way across the top, but the bed needs space to come down. I installed these top pieces with my brad nailer!

Baseboard

Next, I had to figure out what to do with the baseboard. I wanted to do the same thing, but when the murphy bed opens it would push the baseboard into the floor. Maybe the baseboard could be hinged? I talked it through with my sister (classic) and we decided to add hinges so the baseboard would move as it touches the ground. We got a few different hinges to try out and then I ran out of patience…hahah. So I tried magnets. And they worked! But then you guys had the genius idea to install one long piece of baseboard but leave it unscrewed from the murphy bed. So it would sort of be floating? GENIUS!

I am SO happy with how this baseboard looks. It could not be more perfect!

Decorative Trim

Next up, trim! This is what really will give it the custom look I want. The trim will be in a box paneling style on all the cabinet doors.

For the smaller trim, I got these miter sheers. This was my first time using them and they’re amazing – especially if you have tons of cuts to make. Also, here’s the trim I’m using!

Can you believe there is a BED BEHIND ME?! I can’t get over how cool this project is. I can’t wait to paint!!!
