Basement Built-Ins: Paint

Trim and crown moulding are DONE on these basement built-ins! I’m so excited to get these things painted!

Prep for Paint

To prep these built-ins, I sanded and caulked them!

I always use tape and plastic whenever I spray paint. I start with Frog Tape for a straight line first and then I attach the tape and plastic to the Frog Tape. I’d never used this hand masker and WOW do I love this thing.

Primer

I used Zinsser Bin Primer. It’s great for Ikea cabinets because they have a slippery surface that paint has a hard time adhering to.

Paint

I want to share my mindset behind my color choice with you. I decided to paint them white (Swiss Coffee) instead of a fun, bold color. I really wanted these cabinets to melt into the walls. I tested a few options, but Swiss Coffee just felt right!

Also, there’s definitely color going on down here in the basement. This room gets pretty dark and the wall with the built-ins is the backdrop for all my business video calls. So, I think Swiss Coffee will brighten this room up really nicely!

I started spraying and my sprayer was CLOGGED. I tried to unclog it and it basically sharted paint all over the place 😂 So I just decided to roll instead…haha.

Hardware

I got these antique brass knobs for the cabinets and they look so good!

Antique Brass Drawer Knobs

Painting was a bit of a mess and took way longer than I’d hope because of my sprayer debacle, but it still looks pretty dang good! What’s a DIY project without a few obstacles?!

Materials

Here’s everything I wore this week while painting my basement built-ins!
