My dad got remarried this year to Gege and we absolutely love her! They live in the same house I grew up in, my mom & dad’s house. We spent months sorting through the house, picking out the things of mom’s we wanted to keep after she passed. The house is just a museum of mom. They’ve changed it up a bit but Kelsey (my sister) and I have been talking about helping them to make it theirs. After redoing my own dining room, I felt inspired. So, we decided to do a little dining room makeover just in time for Thanksgiving!
Here’s what the room looked like when we started.
Kelsey and I made a little mood board for this dining room makeover. Here it is! My dad’s plan is to build a table like the one in the mood board. For now, we’re just making it work with their existing table. Gege LOVES blue so we went with this beautiful, deep, slate blue.
This is a historic house, built in 1850! My parents did a really good job keeping it true to it’s history. We were trying to be mindful of that while bringing some freshness into the space. It’s common for historic, colonial houses to have trim that contrasts the wall and below the chair chair rail. So, we did that!
Paint
We chose to use this beautiful color, Slate Tile by Sherwin Williams. We painted below the chair rail, all the trim, and the fire place this color! Then, we painted the rest of the wall space and the ceiling with this full coverage Shoji White.
The Hutch
They painted this hutch in here a beautiful light blue. This hutch stores a ton of stuff so we put a fabric behind the glass. I ordered these curtains and just stapled it right onto the wood. It looked so cute!
Decor
We mostly used existing furniture and art from around the house that have special meaning to them. Then, I foraged outside..haha. There are 5 really old magnolia trees outside the house and I love them. I brought over a vase and filled it with some!
Here’s the final look!
What an upgrade! Like I said, this project brought up many emotions for us…but it was overwhelmingly joyful and exciting to create a new space for my dad and Gege to enjoy and make memories of their own.

Here’s everything we used in the dining room:
Note: Most of the decor from this space is vintage. I found similar items for you! The rug, dining chairs, black vase, chandelier, candelabra, and ginger jar are all similar styles to what we used in this room.
