DIY Murphy Bed – Final Touches

Okay, my basement built-in cabinets are PAINTED and my DIY murphy bed is BUILT. All I had left were some final DIY touches to complete this space before decorating it. Time to make it beautiful!

Here’s my mood board for the design aspect of this space.

Murphy Bed Headboard

Since the murphy bed is anchored to the ceiling and cabinets rather than the back wall, it sticks out a bit. So, I decided to make a shelf/headboard! I first added plywood on the sides to cover the cabinets.

Then, I painted the entire inside of the murphy bed and the plywood with Swiss Coffee. After that, I added a ledger for the shelf top to sit on.

Next up was stain. Stain and I do not have good history…haha. So I decided to try staining the headboard. If it looked like crap, I’d upholster it. But, I at least wanted to try!!!

Honestly it looked amazing! For the shelf top, I used edge-banding to make it look seamless. Then, I pre-stained, then stained it. It’s PERFECT!

Charging Station

I decided to pull an outlet over so guests could have a place to charge their phones right by the bed.

Murphy Bed Lighting

This space needed some lighting! So, I did to some electrical work so there could be sconces on either side of the murphy bed.

I got these sconces from Pooky lighting and put one on each side. I love them!

Murphy Bed Mural

I am obsessed with this mural. I love how the cabinets are white and when the murphy bed is down, this space will be full of character!

Next up, REVEAL! YAY!
