DIY Dining Room Light

Paint in the dining room is DONE! You can see that whole process in this blog post. The progress in here is 👌. A while ago I asked you guys to guess what this weird wire thing was on my dining room table. A lot of you guessed it right! I decided to make a light for my dining room.

Let me give you a little context first. I saw this light on Pinterest over a year ago and have obsessed over the idea of it in my dining room ever since. It was the whole inspiration behind this new design.

Eventually, I ordered it from a website I’d never purchased from. It was about $600 and took several weeks to arrive. This is what it looked like when I opened the box…

Not only did it NOT look like the photo, but it was all bent/warped and a totally different size than the description. Every website that sells it has that same images. I didn’t want to risk ordering a janky one again. But, my sister makes lights with the help of a fabricator. She was like “Cass…we can make this light!” So…WE ARE MAKING THIS LIGHT!

Plans

My sister drew up plans and sent it to the fabricator and they made this frame. So, we just needed to sew the fabric to fit and also make a tassel. Here are the plans she drew up…cool right?!

We used this white polyester fabric from Walmart and got this tassel from Etsy in color #22.

Getting Started

Kelsey wrapped the spines with a fabric tape which would give us something to sew the fabric onto. This wouldn’t be exactly like the inspiration – but it would have Kelsey’s spin on it (which I love).

After all the fabric tape was on we stretched our first piece of fabric and pinned it in place to the spines. Then, we’d sew into the fabric tape. She took it home to finish it up since there was a lot of tedious sewing involved. It was already looking SO GOOD!

Once we held the progress up to the ceiling, it confirmed I needed the ceiling painted. So, I went ahead and did that with a color called Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. You can see more the paint process here.

When she came back with the light, I was ECSTATIC. She finished off by covering the visible seams with bias tape to give it a nice finished look. We opened it up and she glued it on.

Installation

Time to install! I was SO excited to see this up. I got this dimmable globe light bulb for the space.

I AM IN LOVE! Dare I say this light looks even better than the inspiration? And I love that it was made by a loved one 🥰

The dining room vision is coming together. Stay tuned for the reveal!
