After finishing up the basement bathroom (the last room in the basement🎉), I got tons of messages asking if my house is done. It definitely isn’t. There are some really big spaces in our home that haven’t been renovated yet like our kitchen and the rest of our backyard. Also the dining room was the first room that I fully changed in our home and my style has developed a ton since then, so it needs some love too. Before I tackle the kitchen and dining room, I am going to do a kitchen hallway makeover!
This hallway is just boring! And if you’ve been following me for a while, you know I strongly believe hallways deserve love and attention too. Last year I redid my upstairs hallway (left) and just a few months ago I finished up my basement stairway/hallway (right). I’m so happy with how both of these turned out!
Here’s what the hallway looked like to start with:
Plans
I plan to build some recessed shelves in the wall across from the garage doorway. Here’s my inspiration:
So first up, I cleaned everything out of this hallway. I took everything off of the shelves in here and took them down.
Materials
- Kreg Crown Jig
- Miter Saw
- Crown Moulding
- Ladder
- Safety Glasses
- Brad Nailer
- Paint Pad
- Anew Grey by Sherwin Williams
- Custom Air Vent
- Utility Knife
- Caulk
Making My Cuts
Time to cut and install trim! I decided to do the same thing I did in my upstairs hallway: layered trim, contrasting paint color on the ceiling, and wallpaper!
I used my kreg crown jig to make all my cuts. It makes the angled cuts so much easier. It does all the math for you. I love this thing!
Installation
I love layering trim. Upstairs I’ve been using picture railing underneath, but I had paneling trim left over from the basement built-in project that I decided to use in here. I used a little scrap piece of wood for a spacer as I nailed in the trim with my brad nailer.
It’s crazy how much of a difference is made just by adding trim. So much better already.
Paint
I painted the trim with a brush and the ceiling with a paint pad. I usually use a roller but I heard these paint pads are way better for ceilings.
Okay, yeah I’m sold on this paint pad. I love this thing because there isn’t any splatter! I used the same Anew Grey by Sherwin Williams that I have on all of our interior doors, the upstairs hallway, and the powder room.
Air Vent Replacement
Then, I wanted to replace my crusty-dusty old air vent. I have this same vent cover in my upstairs hallway as well. It comes with a new frame and a magnetic wood panel. It’s the easiest thing ever. I installed it and then painted the same color as the trim and ceiling.
Next up…..WALLPAPER!
